How will this course be different from other courses? Human Rights education cannot be reduced to the simple introduction of human rights content in a classroom. Human rights education implies the learning and practice of human rights. A holistic approach to human rights education means that human rights are taught through both content transmission and experiences. Therefore, we at HURT believe that human right education should not only be theoretical but should also provide skills to people to enable them to practice that skills and to respect human rights of citizens.

The primary goal is to develop participants’ ability to think critically, understand and deliberate on the intricacies of Human rights. The course is adequately interspersed with field visits as we believe this would expose participants to the means available for the protection of human rights. It also exposes participants to the local, state and if possible national mechanisms available for the protection of human rights. Since the participants are from a diverse background the course begins with an introductory module and ends with skills based module. The course has modules which require to make presentations on relevant themes, study reports as well as summarize and analyze debates.

The guest lecturers have been chosen so as to have a panel of distinguished practioners and academicians who would enrich the whole experience with their knowledge as well as field experiences.

Sexual Slavery, In The 21st Century -- Traffickers in many countries in West Africa take girls through voodoo rituals in which girls take oaths of silence and are often raped and beaten, prior to their leaving the country. They are also forced to sign agreements stating that, once they arrive in another country, they owe the traffickers a set amount of money. They are sworn to secrecy and given detailed accounts of how they will be tortured if they break their promise. Traffickers have taken women and young girls to shrines and places of cultural or religious significance; they remove pubic and other hair and then perform a ceremony of intimidation.
